Coombe Fisheries

Our Company

Coombe Fisheries Ltd is a leading seafood processor based in the South West of England. Formed in 1980, we are a local, family business which has achieved consistent growth through developing and sustaining long term partnerships with supplier and customers alike.

Currently employing 120 people at its custom built production site in Barnstaple, Devon, our main activities are the processing of king scallops, whelks, cuttlefish, squid and sprat and the global supply of these products from local restaurants, through to continental hypermarkets and also the Far East.

Quality is paramount to us and we have attained BRC accreditation against the Global Food Standard from the first attempt back in 2001. It has held this certification at the highest level attainable, recently ensuring this proud traditon continues into 2018 by attained Grade A during our latest audit.

Sustainability and the environment are very important to us  For years we have only sourced product as far as possible from vessels that hold the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme award ( and we sit on several industry groups to ensure it’s long term viability. We, along with other scallop processors, co-sponsored a phd student from Bangor University in her 3 year study into the biomass of scallops in the English Channel - despite the bad press that is often hurled at the scallop industry, the industry is very proactive in ensuring the sustainaiblity of the fishery and are constantly researching inproved methodologies as well as monitoring stock levels and gathering scientific data upon which informed decisions can be made.

For years we have recycled all the plastic and cardboad by compacting on site and passing it to local recycling plants. Years ago we broke the mould and installed a system that reduces our electricity consumption by 8% and we recently upgraded our fleet of trucks to brand new, efficient models. In the same year we installed a 41.3kwh solar array and since have installed a second, larger array. We also support the Cycle to Work Scheme and are proud to report that over 70% of our emplyees walk or cycle to work.

We are committed to investing heavily in it’s staff, plant and processing equipment. Constantly striving to improve efficiency, we recognise the high importance of our front line staff and have appointed staff advocates to help newcomers to bed in. We also regularly hold consultative meetings and progress staff members internally as often as possible.

We are justifiably proud of the products that we supply. We have struck the balance between professionalism, courtesy and amiability and this has stood us in good stead for more than 35 years.
